The escalation of hostilities around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine is again raising the risk of disaster, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned on Friday.

Raffaele Grossi said he personally saw “clear signs of military preparation” around Europe’s largest nuclear power plant when he visited it three weeks ago. “Since then, our experts in the area have frequently reported hearing explosions, which in some cases indicated close range bombing. I am deeply concerned about the situation at the station,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Fears of a possible nuclear accident have grown in the face of a planned counter-offensive by the Ukrainian military to liberate occupied territory.

The plant with six nuclear reactors, which has been under the control of Russian forces since March 2022, must not be a base for attacks or come under fire, Grossi said, renewing calls for tougher measures to ensure sensitive site protection. He assured that he will continue to consult with Russian and Ukrainian officials on this issue.
