“A second batch of four more tanks will follow,” the Spanish foreign minister said in an interview with German media group Funke, published today.
Spain will deliver within the next few days the first six of a total of 10 Leopard 2 tanks it has promised to Ukraine, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez said.
“A second batch of four more tanks will follow,” the Spanish foreign minister said in an interview with German media group Funke, published today.
“We will support Ukraine as long as necessary,” he said, referring to “humanitarian aid, reception of refugees and delivery of defensive weapons systems.”
Recently, 55 Ukrainians completed their Leopard tank training in Spain: 40 crew members and 15 engineers.
The Leopards delivered by Spain to Ukraine are of an older type (2A4). The Spanish army has a total of 347 Leopard tanks. Of these, 108 are Leopard 2A4 and 239 are Leopard 2A6 (note which are more advanced).
Ukraine’s armed forces have already received Leopard tanks from Germany, Canada and Poland in order to push back Russian invaders from the occupied territories.
