The removal of British diplomats and their families from Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced.

He characterized the evacuation “complicated and fast”, adding that a “difficult operation” had to be organized.

More than 1,200 members of the British armed forces, marines and members of the Royal Air Force participated in the organization and execution of this operation.

British soldiers had moved to a military base near the African country in preparation for the operation.

Defense Secretary Ben Wallace told the BBC that the diplomats and their relatives were initially taken to an airport outside Khartoum overnight, from where they were eventually evacuated safely. He also thanked France and the USA for the help they provided.

Mr. Sunak also said that the government is working to ensure that all British nationals still in Sudan are safe.

He also called on the warring parties “to immediately implement a humanitarian ceasefire to ensure that civilians can leave the conflict zones”.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley added that London is working around the clock to build international support to end the bloodshed in Sudan.
