Harry Belafonte, the Jamaican-American singer, songwriter and ground-breaking actor who began his entertainment career in the 1950s, died on Tuesday at the age of 96, according to the New York Times.

His first big success was Matilda (Matilda) with which he became known as the “king of the veil”.

Among his worldwide hits was Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).

Belafonte had become a prominent civil rights activist and associated with Martin Luther King.

He was a supporter of John F. Kennedy and has been an opponent of US foreign policy since the early 1980s.

In public statements he opposed the US embargo on Cuba, while he declared his opposition to the US invasion of Grenada. He repeatedly applauded Fidel Castro[11]whom he visited in Cuba.

The artist lived for many years in New York and received countless awards for his humanitarian actions.
