Sweden’s government intends to follow Denmark’s example and implement a much stricter immigration policy, the country’s conservative Prime Minister Ulf Kristerson, who took office in October, said on Tuesday.

Denmark is 10 to 15 years ahead of Sweden on this issue, Mr Christerson said during a visit to Copenhagen, according to the Ritzau news agency.

His counterpart Mette Frederiksen and her Social Democratic Party have implemented an extremely strict immigration policy for 20 years. The Danish prime minister said she was satisfied that her policy was inspiring other countries.

During their meeting, the two prime ministers discussed ways to deport refugees whose asylum applications are rejected and to fight crime, according to their services.

According to official data, about 18,700 people applied for asylum last year in Sweden and about 4,600 in Denmark, Ritzau reported.
