New focus of tension in the Baltic. German and British fighter jets intercepted three Russian jets, including a reconnaissance and electronic warfare aircraft, as they flew in international airspace over the Baltic Sea, the German Air Force announced on Wednesday, releasing relevant photos.

The three Russian jets, two Sukhoi Su-27 fighters and an Ilyushin reconnaissance aircraft of the Il-20 series, had their position transmitters turned off. They were intercepted by Eurofighter fighters of the two NATO member states.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania do not have their own in their fighter fleets; the North Atlantic Treaty Organization guarantees the security of the airspace of the three former Soviet republics, which border Russia, since they became members in 2004.

In early April, after eight months, the German army handed over alternating command of this mission to the British. However, the Luftwaffe – the German Air Force – will continue to offers support to the RAF the rest of April.
