The German lower house, the Bundestagon Wednesday extended the participation of the federal armed forces in the EU’s Operation Peace in the Mediterranean for another year.

In the vote, 555 members of the German national delegation were in favor, 101 against and 1 abstained.

The Bundeswehr is therefore able to continue participating in the mission until 30 April 2024, deploying a maximum of 300 military personnel.

Operation Peace was created to guarantee the implementation of the UN arms embargo on Libya and prevent people-trafficking through sea lanes that take migrants and refugees.

Another purpose of the operation is to prevent the illegal export of crude oil and/or refined petroleum products from Libya.

One aspect of the operation is the rescue of refugees trying to reach Europe from Libya. In mid-April, two Italian warships, part of the mission, rescued 1,266 people in two missions.

The arms embargo was imposed by the United Nations on Libya in 2016, amid civil war and chaos in the country after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. To this day, various armed groups are vying for power and influence, while the conflict in the country foreign powers have been involved, including Turkey, Russia, etc.
