An initiative to collect signatures from citizens aimed at legalizing the parenthood of two men of a child from birth, today exceeded the 50,000 signatures needed in Denmark to be debated in Parliament, which is called to decide on the issue.
The text, which was published on January 7 for the collection of signatures, proposes the creation of parenthood, which will automatically give the child and the “two fathers” a number of rights and legal obligations, especially with regard to custody and inheritance.
With more than 73,000 signatures as of this afternoon, the signature collection garnered a very large number of supporters in record time.
“At the moment, parenthood can be shared between a man and a woman or between two women, but not between two men. “Clearly, there is a lack of justice,” Soren Christensen Juliusen, who took the initiative, told AFP.
She and her husband welcomed Charlie, who was born to a surrogate mother, in late November.
His husband is the biological father of the child, but Juliusen has no parental rights, which prevents the child from going to the doctor or enrolling him in daycare. It intends to adopt it after two and a half years, as permitted by Danish law today.
“I’m sure there will be a change. “In Denmark, we like to be a pioneer in terms of gay rights,” added the 40-year-old, who is currently on parental leave as a “social parent”.
In 1989, Denmark was the first country in the world to allow same-sex union.
The Danish Constitution stipulates that a text can be debated in Parliament if it has received the signatures of more than 50,000 people.
