Police in Quebec have found a body in the area where two firefighters were lost after being swept away by rushing torrents while they were part of an operation to evacuate residents from their flooded homes.

The two volunteer firefighters, Christopher Lavoie, 23, and Regis Lavoie, 55 (no relation) went missing on Monday afternoon while helping residents near Beau-Saint-Paul, about 100 kilometers north of the city of Quebec.

Around 5 p.m. (Greece time) today, a helicopter “spotted a body,” Quebec police spokesman Sergeant Stephane Treble said. “We still do not have the official identification (of the victim) but everything indicates that it is one of the two men who have been missing since Monday,” he added.

Investigations are ongoing for the identification of the second missing person.

“We lost two men, two volunteer firefighters. It’s incredibly sad,” Quebec Premier Francois Legault said in a Facebook post.

Quebec has been on high alert since the beginning of the week due to the risk of flooding after the melting ice was followed by torrential rains across the province. A total of 105 municipalities have taken emergency measures and more than 600 homes were flooded, according to the latest update from the Ministry of Public Security.
