North Korea: Kim launches ‘supersonic’ missile launch – What demonstrates

by

North Korea’s official news agency reported today that the country had successfully launched a supersonic missile in the presence of leader Kim Jong Un for the first time in about a year and a half.

The missile test sparked condemnation from both Washington and Tokyo, and the UN secretary-general did not hide his concern.

It was the second missile launch by North Korea in less than a week, in the wake of Kim Jong Un’s New Year’s Eve commitment to boosting his country’s advanced technology, at a time when talks with South Korea and the US are “frozen”.

“The missile test was aimed at the final verification of the technical specifications of the developed ultrasonic weapon system,” the North Korean news agency KCNA said, adding that “the supersonic maneuverability of the supersonic weapon was dramatically verified during the last test.”

Kim Jong Un urged military scientists to “further accelerate efforts to strengthen the country’s armed forces, both in terms of quality and quantity, as well as to modernize them,” the North Korean news agency reported.

It is worth noting that this was the first time since the beginning of 2020 that Kim Jong Un was present at a missile test. “His presence demonstrates his commitment to this program,” said Ankit Panda, an analyst at the US-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
