US President Joe Biden and his Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador will discuss the issue of immigration during the day, as the controversial “Title 42” health measure is expected to expire on Thursday, the latter said on Monday. .

The two leaders will also discuss the fight against the trafficking of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid blamed for tens of thousands of American deaths each year, and bilateral economic cooperation, Mr. López Obrador said during his morning news conference.

Title 42, a health measure enacted by Republican President Donald Trump’s administration when the novel coronavirus pandemic hit, allowed the immediate deportation of immigrants crossing the U.S. land border — not excluding asylum seekers.

Initially, Mr Biden decided to keep the controversial measure in place, but it is expected to be lifted on Thursday and US border cities are already bracing for a massive increase in the flow of migrants and refugees.

The US government says it intends to register asylum seekers in the future at identification centers in Guatemala and Colombia to determine whether they are eligible for international protection before making the perilous journey to US territory through Central America and Mexico.
