The economy continues to be the main concern of respondents
US President Joe Biden’s popularity remains near the lowest level of his tenure, with citizens expressing dissatisfaction with his handling of immigration and inflation, according to an Ipsos poll for Reuters.
According to the findings of the three-day survey, 40% of Americans approve of President Biden’s job performance, up one point from a Reuters/Ipsos poll last month.
The economy remains the top concern among respondents, as the Fed’s interest rate hike in the US central bank’s bid to tame inflation is causing headaches for borrowers.
Also of concern is the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions that have prevented many foreigners from crossing into the US to seek asylum. Long queues of migrants are seen in Tijuana, Mexico, ahead of the lifting of restrictions on Thursday.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 54 percent of respondents — including 77 percent of Republicans and 34 percent of Democrats — oppose increasing the number of undocumented immigrants allowed into the country each year.
Just 26% said they approved of the Biden administration’s handling of immigration.
66% of respondents support sending troops to the border to reinforce border patrols.
The Pentagon recently announced that 1,500 troops will be temporarily deployed to the border in anticipation of the lifting of pandemic restrictions.
Republicans have accused the Biden administration of being soft on immigration. Republican presidential front-runner former President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his campaign, recalling what he did during his days in the White House.
Democratic US President Joe Biden, who will seek re-election in 2024, has also been criticized by Republicans for increasing government spending. Biden will meet with Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to discuss the impasse over the federal government’s borrowing ceiling.
54% of poll respondents opposed raising the debt ceiling.
The poll was conducted on a representative sample of 1,022 adults and the margin of statistical error is ±3%.
