Russia does not set ultimatums in its negotiations with the West, but needs concrete answers to its security concerns, the Kremlin said today as talks with NATO were held in Brussels.
“We do not want, as American officials do, at the moment to launch threats, ultimatums, to predict who will pay a high price. , despite the difficult situation. “Nevertheless, we prefer to talk first and then make assessments and forecasts,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov.
“We are not negotiating with the US and NATO on security guarantees from a position of power, they do not have and can not have any ultimatums here,” Peshkov said.
Russia was due to present its demands for security guarantees in Europe to the 30 NATO allies, following intense talks Monday in Geneva with the United States, which showed the two sides had significant differences to bridge.
The meetings are part of an effort to defuse the worst tensions between East and West since the Cold War, sparked mainly by a dispute over Ukraine in which the United States says Russia may be planning an invasion. Moscow, however, denies the allegations.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov, referring to Ukraine, told reporters that Russia was ready to negotiate directly with Ukraine, provided the existing agreements are respected.
Peshkov said the actual fire exercises with troops and tanks carried out by Russian forces near the Ukrainian border yesterday, Tuesday, were not related to NATO talks.
