Airstrikes and artillery fire intensified early this morning across Sudan’s capital, residents said, as the army seeks to push back rival paramilitaries it has been fighting for more than a month.

Airstrikes and the sound of clashes and explosions could be heard in southern Khartoum, while parts of the neighboring towns of Bahri and Omdurman were heavily shelled overnight, witnesses said.

Fighting between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force has also caused unrest in other parts of the country, particularly in the western region of Darfur, but is concentrated in Khartoum.

The fighting has forced some 200,000 people to flee to neighboring countries while more than 700,000 have been displaced within Sudan, sparking a humanitarian crisis that threatens to destabilize the region.
