The prime minister of Japan Fumio Kishida agreed with the US president Joe Biden to continue the sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine, as he said speaking to reporters after the meeting the two leaders had in Hiroshima earlier today.

Kishida and Biden had a one-on-one meeting ahead of the Group of Seven (G7) summit of the most industrialized nations. This session (May 19-21) will discuss a range of issues, from climate change to food security and sanctions against Russia.

We agree to work closely with like-minded countries, including the G7, and we have agreed to continue tough sanctions on Russia as well as strong support for UkraineKishida said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to participate via video call in Sunday’s meeting of the G7 which, in addition to the US and Japan, also includes Britain, Canada, France, Germany and Italy.

Earlier, the White House said Biden and Kishida discussed ways to strengthen their defense cooperation as well as counter China. “We will also continue to cooperate closely on various China-related issues and agreed to work together to address common challenges related to China,” Kishida said.
