A strong 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean southeast of New Caledonia today, triggering a tsunami warning.
According to the latest data from the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 37 kilometers at a distance of 333.8 kilometers from the coast of New Caledonia.
The Pacific Tsunami Early Warning Center (PTWC) has issued a warning for the risk of seismic sea waves, which are “likely” to reach a radius of up to 1,000 kilometers around the epicenter.
“Based on the preliminary parameters of the earthquake, dangerous tsunami waves are likely to hit coasts at a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers from the epicenter,” the PTWC said in its emergency warning bulletin. He called on the residents of the threatened areas to be vigilant. He clarified that there is a danger for New Caledonia, the Fiji Islands and Vanuatu. Australia’s weather service said Lord Howe Island was under threat; in New Zealand, authorities limited themselves to saying they were still assessing the risk.
However, a hotel receptionist in Noumea – the capital of New Caledonia – told AFP that he did not feel any earthquake.
