Material damage is estimated at 5 billion euros, but this amount is very likely to increase
The Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni returned earlier than planned from Japan’s G7 summit to visit areas affected by the killer storm surge, in the region of Emilia Romagna.
On Tuesday the cabinet is going to meet in Rome to approve emergency support measures for those affected. According to the latest figures, fifteen people lost their lives and so far, over thirty-six thousand people have been forced to leave their homes due to the disasters. Material damage is estimated at five billion euros, but this amount is very likely to increase.
“Finally the sun came out, the situation started to improve. A large part of the city of Cesena, for example, tomorrow I hope will have been cleaned of mud,” Emilia Romagna regional governor Stefano Bonacini told the Rtl 102.5 radio network. As the experts emphasize, however, the risk of new landslides remains very high throughout the region.
The competent authorities decided to extend the state of maximum alert until tomorrow, although according to the meteorological forecasts, only light rains are expected in the wider area of Bologna in the next hours.
