Brazil condemned on Monday the “racist attacks” repeatedly suffered in Spain by its ace Real Madrid, Vinicius Junior and called on the country’s government and sports authorities to punish those involved, according to the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry summoned Spain’s ambassador on Monday (22/05) to explain the situation following the latest incident on Sunday (21/05), when racist comments were allegedly “hurled” at the Merengues’ black striker and top scorer.
“Considering the seriousness of the events and the emergence of yet another unacceptable episode, the government of Brazil deeply regrets that, until now, no effective measures have been taken to prevent and avoid the recurrence of these acts of racism,” the statement said.
The Foreign Office confirmed it was requested by the ambassador Mar Fernandez Palacios to report on the incident that prompted President Luiz Iñásio Lula da Silva to call on FIFA and LaLiga to act immediately to stop the spread of racism, which appears to be taking root, in football stadiums.
