Reactions after the visit of Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir
Morocco, his ally Israeldenounced today the “provocative actions” of a far-right Israeli minister who went on Sunday to the Square of the Mosques, in the occupied and annexed East Jerusalem of the Jewish state.
“The Kingdom of Morocco strongly denounces the new invasion by a member of the Israeli government (in Mosque Square)” and “rejects these repeated provocative actions,” the foreign minister announced Nasser Burita.
A point of frequent conflict, the Square of Mosques, the Temple Mount for Jews, where the Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, is in the Palestinian sector of Old City of Jerusalem.
Morocco “demands an immediate end to these actions that affect the legal and historical status of the holy city,” Bourita said on the sidelines of a press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba in Rabat.
The visit of the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir it took place a few days after “Jerusalem Day” which marks the “reunification” of the city after Israel’s 1967 conquest of East Jerusalem, during which racist anti-Arab slogans were heard.
“We hope that these provocations will stop as all they do is feed extremism and violence in the region,” said the head of Moroccan diplomacy.
Morocco, a party to the Abraham Accords, an agreement between the Jewish state and several Arab countries, reached after negotiations with the US, has repeatedly expressed its disapproval since ultranationalist movements came to power in Israel.
Rabat favors the establishment of a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, alongside the state of Israel.
This does not prevent it from developing a cooperation with Israel at all levels, focusing mainly on a cooperation in the military and security sectors after the normalization of bilateral relations in December 2020.
