Coronavirus – Mexico: 43,523 cases – 148 deaths in 24 hours but president optimistic

by

For the third consecutive 24 hours, Mexico approached a record number of new coronavirus infections yesterday, Thursday.

The Ministry of Health announced that in the previous 24 hours 43,523 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed, with the total number of registered cases reaching 4,257,776.

The absolute record was set the previous day and was 44,187 cases, amid the spread of the most contagious Omicron variant.

During the same period, another 148 patients died from complications of COVID-19, bringing the death toll from the pandemic to 300,912.

Mexican Ministry of Health officials acknowledge that the official figures are far from accurate, as not all patients die in hospitals, nor are large enough tests performed to form an accurate picture of the epidemiological situation.

Towards the “exit”?

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who announced that he was infected with the virus – for the second time – on Monday night, however, stated yesterday that he sees the “exit” of COVID, both for himself and for his country, despite consecutive case records, because the Omicron variant does not cause such severe disease.

“I’m on my way out of COVID,” said the 68-year-old head of state, who became infected despite receiving a booster dose in December.

“It is very encouraging to verify in your own body that this variant does not present the same mortality or danger as the previous variant, the Delta,” added Lopez Obrador, smiling and apparently in full form, referring to Omicron. .

“I never had a fever, I did not have headaches, I did not have a lack of oxygen,” the president said, referring only to hoarseness and a burning sensation in the throat, which he received with paracetamol.

“It simply came to my notice then. “It is always a pandemic, but I believe that with this new variant, there is no such high risk,” he said.

“We have hospital admissions, but they are not increasing much and, most importantly, we do not have more deaths,” he insisted.

“After this period of infections, which are true that they are increasing, we will be able to return to normal,” he added.

The death toll of the last few days is far from the level of mortality recorded in the previous wave of the pandemic (1,803 deaths on January 21, 2021).

Authorities have taken virtually no action to stem the tide. The borders remain open.

In absolute terms, Mexico has the fifth heaviest pandemic death toll in the world. In proportion to its population, it falls to 20th place in the list of deaths per million inhabitants.
