Denmark plans to increase its spending on military aid to Ukraine by 17.9 billion crowns ($2.59 billion) during this year and next, the prime minister said today Mete Frederiksenreceiving the thanks of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Denmark, with a population of less than 6 million, set up a $1 billion fund in March for military, civilian and business aid to Ukraine in 2023.

Frederiksen, considered a possible candidate for the post of NATO chief, told her country’s state radio today that the government plans to add an additional 7.5 billion crowns to the fund this year and 10.4 billion next year.

“This major contribution will further strengthen the combat capabilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the short and medium term,” Zelensky said in a post on Twitter. “Our strength lies in unity!”

The new sums are earmarked for military aid, Danmarks Radio reported. The announcement came ahead of visits this week by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to Sweden, Norway and Finland.

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary general, is expected to leave his post in September. Finland recently joined NATO because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, while Sweden hopes to join the alliance by its summit in Vilnius in July.
