The creation of a post-war demilitarized zone within Russia, on the border with Ukraine, is proposed by a Kiev official.

Advisor to the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, Michael Podoliaksaid on Monday that a 100-120km long demilitarized zone should be established inside Russia along the border with Ukraine as part of a post-war settlement.

The zone would be necessary to protect areas of Ukraine from bombing, the adviser to the president of Ukraine wrote on Twitter.

“The main theme of a post-war settlement should be the establishment of safeguards to prevent future aggression,” Podoliak wrote in his post.

For the safety of residents in several frontline regions of Ukraine, he wrote, “it is necessary to create a demilitarized zone 100-120 km in the republics of Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk and Rostov”.

Referring to regions of Russia as republics appears to be a signal to Moscow that it supports separatist entities calling themselves “People’s Republics” in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk and Luhansk which border Russia.

Podoliak said that in the demilitarized zone there must initially be an international presence to control it.

“Probably, at the initial stage with a mandatory international level of control,” he wrote.
