Ukrainians MPs approved a plan today sanctions against Iran, which is accused of supplying Moscow with weapons for its invasion of Ukraine, in a move that marks a rupture in relations between Kiev and the Islamic Republic.
“This resolution synchronizes Ukrainian sanctions with the actions of the entire civilized world on the path to the complete isolation of Iran,” the Ukrainian parliament said on its website.
This package of sanctions includes a ban on military trade with Iran, the cessation of transit of such goods through Ukraine, and the “suspension of economic and financial obligations in favor of Iranian residents.”
The resolution must now be signed by Volodymyr Zelenskyi to become law, a formality since the Ukrainian president is the one who tabled the resolution in parliament, following a recommendation from the Security and Defense Council.
Iran is a close partner of Russia and is accused by Kiev and the West of supplying weapons used by Moscow in its invasion of Ukraine, including Iranian-made Shahed kamikaze drones.
Kiev initially attempted an appeasement tactic towards the Islamic Republic, but that approach failed, leading to the current move.
“Today’s Iran is a terrorist regime that poses a threat to Europe and the Middle East,” Mykhailo Podoliak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, wrote on Twitter yesterday.
His posting came after one of the biggest drone attacks in the Ukrainian capital since the start of the war. Several dozen Iranian drones were used in this attack.
“Tehran has become a key ally of Moscow in this war, deliberately supplying Russia with weapons for attacks on civilian cities,” Podoliak said.
Zelensky addressed the Iranian people via video last week, saying “the Shaheds are sowing terror every night in Ukraine.”
Tehran accused the Ukrainian president on Saturday of criticizing Iran in a bid to get more aid and weapons from the West.
