Coronavirus – Brazil: Vaccination of children started from Sao Paulo

by

Vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 against Covid-19 in Brazil began today, in Sao Paulo, a month after it was approved by the health authorities, despite criticism from President Zaich Bolsonaro.

8-year-old indigenous Davi Ceremramive Savante was the first child in Brazil to be vaccinated during an official ceremony at the Hospital das Clinicas in Sao Paulo.

The ceremony was attended by Joao Doria, governor of the state of Sao Paulo, an opponent of Bolsonaro and a candidate for the October presidency.

It was also in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest metropolis with a population of 12 million, that the first dose of a Covid vaccine in Brazil was given to a 54-year-old nurse on January 17, 2021.

Mass vaccination of children aged 5-11 will begin next week across the country. More than 20 million children will be able to be vaccinated, with pediatric doses of the Pfizer-BioNtech US laboratory vaccine, provided their parents have given them permission.

Priority in vaccination will be given to children with comorbidities and who belong to the most vulnerable populations, such as the natives.

This vaccination campaign starts one month after the green light of the Anvisa Health Surveillance Service.

Since then, President Bolsonaro has not stopped criticizing this decision, assuring that he will never vaccinate his 11-year-old daughter Laura.

According to official figures from the Ministry of Health, more than 300 children aged 5-11 have died from Covid-19 in Brazil, which counts a total of more than 620,000 dead, the second worst death toll in the United States.
