The statement of German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock from Oslo that Ukraine cannot become a member of NATO while the war rages is causing a sensation
NATO’s foreign ministers reiterated from Oslo the undivided support of the North Atlantic Alliance in the struggle fought by Ukraine and its president Volodymyr Zelensky, a year and a half after the Russian invasion. All NATO members agree that Ukraine must be included in the defense alliance, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said, while it must be ensured that after the end of this war there will be an end to Russian aggression.
However, the approach of the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Analena Burbock, is sensational, who stated from Oslo that although the “open door policy” is obviously in effect in NATO, at the same time, as she said, “we are in the midst of war and therefore I cannot to talk about the accession of a new member (Ukraine) to NATO”.
In fact, according to exclusive information from the German News Agency, in the closed-door consultations in Oslo, countries such as the United States of America and Germany have expressed that they do not intend to proceed for the time being in no particular commitment for the accession of Ukraine to NATO, on the basis of a “vague declaration” of 2008, when then the heads of state and government of NATO were in favor of a future accession to NATO, of Ukraine and Georgia, but without a specific timetable.
Critical Summit of the Baltic States in Wismar
At the same time, all eyes today are also on the German city of Wismar on the shores of the Baltic Sea, where the Summit of Foreign Ministers of the Council of the Baltic States under the presidency of Germany begins under strict security measures.
Since 1992, ten countries have participated in this specific consultation scheme: Germany, Poland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, and under earlier also Russia. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the Council suspended Russia’s participation, which a few months later left permanently. In the meantime, the observer status that Belarus had in the past has also been suspended.
This year’s central theme is Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and threats to the geostrategically critical area of the Baltic Sea. An also declared goal of the countries participating in the specific consultation scheme is to become energy independent by 2050 using renewable energy sources. Extensive wind turbine parks are already operating in the Baltic Sea, while Germany has also set a goal of closer cooperation with neighboring countries in this field.
