Lasso rules by decree after in May invoked a constitutional provision to dissolve parliament and call elections as he faced impeachment and removal from office.
Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso announced today that he will not run in August’s snap election and called on parties to unite to defend democracy in the country.
Lasso rules by decree after in May invoked a constitutional provision to dissolve parliament and call elections as he faced impeachment and removal from office.
“I want to be clear, I will not accept to be a candidate for the presidency in the next elections on August 20,” he told reporters and members of his government. “The work does not stop, on the contrary, it will double. There’s no point in campaigning when the country needs me to be committed to the people,” he said, referring to the remainder of his term.
Lasso criticized what he called a “minority political sector” that is destroying the country and called on all democratic parties to unite against autocracy.
Lasso, a former banker who will run for president in 2021, has faced constant pressure from the opposition-controlled parliament. MPs tried twice to remove him from office.
The president and deputies elected in August will hold office until 2025.
