Senior Chinese and US diplomats held “sincere” and “constructive” talks in Beijing on how to improve bilateral relations, despite the two countries’ differences on many and varied issues, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced today.
US Undersecretary of State for East Asia Daniel Crittenbrick was in the Chinese capital in recent days accompanied by Sarah Beran, President Joe Biden’s adviser on China and Taiwan affairs.
The two US envoys met with Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu on Monday and also held talks with Yang Tao, director of the department in charge of North America and Oceania.
“The two sides had frank, constructive and productive communication on the improvement of Sino-US relations and the proper management of differences” between the two sides, according to the Chinese diplomatic statement.
“China has expressed its official position on Taiwan,” an issue fueling tensions between Beijing and Washington, according to the text, which clarifies that “the two sides agreed to continue their communication.”
China considers Taiwan its province, pending reunification with the mainland since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949. It says it hopes “reunification” will be done peacefully, but has not ruled out the use of force.
Tensions between Beijing and Washington also extend to many other issues, from technology dominance to the treatment of the Muslim Uyghur minority, trade, or the South China Sea.

US officials also “made it clear that the US will compete vigorously and defend its interests and values”.
