THE leader of the conservative opposition in SpainThe Alberto Nunez Feijoagreed today to participate in telefight by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez ahead of parliamentary elections elections her July 23rd.
Last week Sanchez decided to dissolve parliament and call early elections after his Socialist Party suffered a heavy defeat in local and regional elections on May 28.
On Monday, Sanchez challenged his opponent to engage in six telefights — one each week until election day — but Feijo’s People’s Party (PP) rejected the proposal as “outrageous.”
Today the Conservative candidate replied that he would take part in at least one debate and added that the parties and their campaign staff would have to decide how many, when and where.
“I have no problem participating in a telefight with Mr. Sanchez, where it will be the two of us. There will be a debate between me and Mr. Sanchez during the election campaign,” he told Onda Cero radio station.
Labor Minister Yolanda Diath, who is seeking a key role in the new parliament with the newly formed Sumar coalition of progressive parties, criticized Sanchez’s proposal and said bipartisanship was a thing of the past.
“Spain is more than a telephone battle between two men,” he commented.
Polls show that the PP is likely to win the parliamentary elections, but will need to form an alliance with the far-right VOX to gain a working majority.
However, polls still show the parliamentary balance could be tipped if leftist Podemos, the junior partner in the Socialist-led coalition government, is to join forces with Sumar.
