Millions of citizens across North America are breathing the dangerous air from the wildfires raging in Canada.

The country is facing one of the worst fire seasons on record with thick smoke being carried further south by the wind.

New York, which is hundreds of miles south of the flames, remains shrouded in an orange haze due to air quality, prompting authorities to issue a health warning to citizens who are advised to wear masks outdoors.

The images coming from the other side of the Atlantic are eerie.

They are handing out free masks in New York

In New York, the distribution of free masks will begin today Thursday for citizens who must move outdoors. Specifically, New York Governor Kathy Hotchul announced on Wednesday that New York will distribute one million masks to state residents on Thursday.

Authorities are warning that hazardous smoky conditions are expected to persist through the weekend.

Much of the smoke comes from Quebec, where 150 fires are burning. More than 15,000 residents are expected to be forced to flee the province, officials said Wednesday.
