Coronavirus – Chile: New record with 9,284 cases in the last 24 hours

by

Chile announced on Saturday that 21 deaths due to complications of Covid-19 and 9,284 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a record number attributed to the spread of the Omicron variant and the increased mobility during the holidays.

“Unfortunately, what we predicted on Monday came true today, that is, we would be surpassing the highest number of new cases ever recorded in the country,” Deputy Health Minister Maria Teresa Valenzuela told reporters.

She expressed concern about the new wave of pandemics, but stressed that there has been no increase in the number of deaths or occupied beds in ICUs.

Coronavirus cases have risen 143% in the last seven days and the number of new infections confirmed on Saturday is more than double that announced on Monday (4,069).

The national positivity index increased to 9.08% in the previous 24 hours, with active cases estimated at 41,895.

Authorities are urging citizens to adhere to the protection measures and to be vaccinated with a booster dose for better protection against the Omicron variant.

“The booster dose shows that the vaccines are effective and reduce the risk of serious illness or death from the virus. However, the measures of individual responsibility have relaxed and now, more than ever, we must observe the preventive measures, as the cases are increasing rapidly “, said Valenzuela.

Chile has so far recorded a total of 1,867,101 confirmed cases and 39,376 patient deaths due to complications of Covid-19.
