The iconic French sociologist Alain Touraine has died at the age of 97, as announced by his daughter.
Alain Turenne was the founder and director of research of the Center for Sociological Analysis and Intervention at the Ecole Supérieur d’Etudes Sociales de Paris and the author of numerous books.
Born on August 3, 1925, He was director of research at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, where he founded the Center d’étude des mouvements sociaux. Touraine was an important figure in the founding of French sociology after World War II and later became an internationally recognized sociologist of social movements, notably the May ’68 student movement in France and the Solidarity trade union movement in communist Poland.
His main interest for most of his career was social movements. He has studied and written extensively on labor movements around the world, particularly in Latin America.
He was a member of the European Academy, the Polish Academy of Sciences and an honorary doctorate of the Universities of Louvain, Geneva, Montreal, York, Bologna, Mexico, Peru, etc.
