Categories for dangerous driving were charged with the driver of the bus that overturned in the Hunter region, north of Sydney in Australia, killing at least 10 guests at a weddingthe police announced.

Twenty-five people were injured in the accident, Australia’s worst in more than 30 years, which occurred at about 11:30 p.m. (local time, 4:30 p.m. Greek time) yesterday Sunday near the town of Greta, located about 180 kilometers northwest of Sydney, police added.

The bus was carrying 35 people when it veered off the road and overturned at a roundabout. It came to rest on its left side on the roadway along the guardrail.

The newlyweds have not been reported among the passengers, while there were no children on the bus.

New South Wales police said 58-year-old bus driver Brett Button was taken to hospital where he was tested to determine if he was under the influence of drugs. Police official Tracy Chapman did not specify the result of those tests.

The driver is expected to appear in court on Tuesday and remains in custody with no bail set.

The Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed “his deepest condolences” to the families of the dead and injured.

“We all know the joy of going to a wedding (…) they are some of the happiest moments. It’s so cruel and so sad and so unfair for such a happy day like this, in a beautiful place, to end with such a tragic loss of life and injuries,” he added.

New South Wales Police Superintendent Karen Webb said authorities believed it was a car accident which only involved one vehicle and added that its causes may not be known for some time.

“We’re looking into all the possibilities of the driver’s behavior,” Chapman said, explaining that some passengers were able to get off the bus and “went to get help.”

The two worst bus accidents on record in Australia were head-on collisions. These road accidents took place in New South Wales over a period of two months in 1989. They killed 35 and 21 people. Another 18 people were killed in 1973 when a tour bus fell into a ravine due to a brake system problem.
