Went to Belgium seeking a better fortune and the one he found exceeded his every expectation: one Ukrainian refugee he won 500,000 euros playing “scratchy”.

The young man who escaped from the war raging in his country, has been living in Brussels for a year. On May 16, he bought a scratch card worth 5 euros at a gas station.

The state gambling authority, which does not release the details of the players, said the refugee was aged between 18 and 24. Like all winners of sums over €100,000, he was invited to the authority’s headquarters in Brussels to be handed his winnings.

“His feelings were very mixed,” said Joke Vermoere, a spokesman for the state gambling authority, according to the statement.

“His mind was clearly on Ukraine and at this time it is difficult to be happy with everything that is happening in his country. But at the same time he was of course very happy with his success and, above all, full of hope.”

“With the money he won, he intends to do something for his countrymen and for the reconstruction of his country. But first he wants to throw a party in Belgium for the family and friends who took care of him and helped him integrate into the local community,” the spokesperson added.

The young man found a job in Belgium, but “of course he would prefer to return to Ukraine as soon as possible, once the war is over,” added Vermoere.
