North Korea: launches new “unidentified” ballistic missile launches

by

North Korea today launched two “unidentified” missiles, believed to be ballistic, into the sea east of the Korean Peninsula, the South Korean Defense Ministry said; this is the fourth missile test in the current conducted by the country of Asia, which has a nuclear arsenal.

“North Korea has fired two missiles of unknown type into the East Sea,” also known as the Sea of Japan, “the Seoul headquarters said in a statement, citing the Japanese Coast Guard.

“North Korea appears to have fired a missile that may have been a ballistic missile,” said a spokesman for the Japanese Coast Guard, referring to one, without elaborating on its orbit. The Japanese Coast Guard said the projectile apparently fell into the sea shortly after it was launched.

The Kyodo news agency, citing a government source, said at least one rocket had landed outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

On Friday, North Korea fired two regular guided missiles from a train. He had already passed two more tests, on the 5th and the 11th of January. According to Pyongyang, supersonic missiles were tested in these first two cases.

Reacting to this series of tests, the US government announced last week the imposition of new sanctions, something that the North Korean government described as a “challenge”.

North Korea has a “legal right” to strengthen its defense, a State Department spokesman told the official KCNA news agency.

Despite a series of international sanctions, Pyongyang has redoubled its efforts to modernize its military, refusing to heed calls for Washington to resume negotiations.

During a meeting of Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party last month, leader Kim Jong Un pledged to continue developing North Korea’s military capabilities.

US dialogue with North Korea remains stalled, with Pyongyang imposing a strict blockade to prevent any outbreaks of the new coronavirus in its territory, further hurting its already troubled economy.
