Turnout was low at the referendum on the revision of the Constitution in Serbia.
According to unofficial data, the turnout was around 30% of those registered to vote. Regardless of the small turnout, the result of the referendum is valid as there is no participation threshold for the success of the referendum.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced at a press conference that the referendum was successful and the people approved the revision of the Constitution. He presented data of his party, according to which with 97% of the votes in his favor, 60.45% voted in favor, while 39.52% voted against the revision of the Constitution.
Voters in Serbia were called to the polls on Sunday 16/12 to approve the revision of the Constitution, answering yes or no to the question “Are you in favor of ratifying a legislative act to revise the Constitution of the Republic of Serbia?”
The revision of the Constitution concerns the rule of law and in particular the election of judges and prosecutors. The amendment of this article of the Constitution is a requirement of the EU in the accession negotiations with Serbia and has the approval of the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.
