According to the announcement issued by the Saudi diplomacy, the 72-hour ceasefire begins at 6 am on Sunday.
Sudan’s warring sides, the army and paramilitaries, have agreed to a new 72-hour ceasefire starting Sunday, Saudi diplomacy said.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States announce the agreement of representatives of the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Force (RSF) for a ceasefire throughout Sudan for a period of 72 hours beginning Sunday at 6 am” , according to the same source.
“The sides agreed that during the ceasefire they will refrain from prohibited movements, attacks, use of military aircraft or drones, artillery attacks, reinforcement of positions and resupply of forces and will refrain from trying to make military gains during the ceasefire of fire,” according to the announcement.
They also agreed to allow free movement and promotion of humanitarian aid throughout Sudan.
“In light of the June 19 donors’ humanitarian conference, mediators called on both sides to take into account the great suffering of the Sudanese people and the need to fully respect the ceasefire and stop the violence.”
“If the sides fail to respect the 72-hour ceasefire, mediators will be forced to consider postponing the Jeddah talks,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the country’s health minister, Haitham Ibrahim, said on Saturday that more than 3,000 people have been killed and 6,000 injured since the conflict broke out in Sudan in mid-April, according to Saudi al-Hadath television.
Ibrahim also stated that only half of Khartoum’s 130 hospitals are still functioning and all hospitals in West Darfur state are out of order.
