Ecuador’s health ministry confirmed that Bela Montoya died of an ischemic stroke after spending a week in intensive care. He added that Montoya remained under “constant surveillance” but did not give further information about the medical investigation surrounding the case, as reported by the Guardian.

The 76-year-old woman who was pronounced dead and surprised relatives by knocking on her coffin during a vigil earlier this month, died after seven days in intensive care. Bella Montoya woke up and started beating on June 9 after spending five hours in her coffin.

Gilberto Montoya, the woman’s son, pointed out that he has yet to receive any medical explanation for what happened to his mother, but warned that he will not leave it at that.

The body of Montoya, who was a retired nurse, is back at the same funeral home where she woke up. Her son told the AP that she will be buried in a public cemetery.

A technical committee has been formed to review the way the hospital issues death certificates, the country’s health ministry said last week.
