The governor of its central bank Finland’s Olli Rehn stated today that he plans to be candidate for the presidency next year when Finland is going to elect a new head of state, and will request time off from work for this purpose.
Ren, 61, who sits on the board of the European Central Bank, said he will take annual leave before the election and will not hold official duties as he prepares to run.
He must to collect 20,000 signatures before he can officially enter the race.
“I will apply for a permit when, hopefully, my candidacy for the presidency is made official,” Wren told a news conference.
Peka Haavisto, who stepped down as Finland’s foreign minister as the government resigned after the general election, recently announced that he would run for president.
Foreign policy and security policy are among the most important constitutional responsibilities of the presidents of Finland.
Finland in April joined the NATO military alliance, in a historic political shift triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and prompting Moscow to threaten “retaliation”.
