The head of the Investigative Committee said that courts operating in parts controlled by Russian forces are working hard to imprison people who fought on the side of Ukrainians against Russian forces.
Russia’s chief researcher said today that over 30 Ukrainians have been sentenced to long prison termss in Russian-held areas of Ukraine, accused of committing serious crimes, such as killing civilians.
Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee, the US FBI’s counterpart in Russia, said courts operating in parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions controlled by Russian forces are working hard to jail people who fought alongside Ukrainians against Russian forces.
“After the liberation of Mariupol and other settlements, many Ukrainian nationalists surrendered. During further work, we began to ascertain their involvement in crimes against peace and human security, including the killing of civilians.”, Bastrykin told Russian news agency TASS. He stated that 90 criminal cases have been referred to the courts.
“Based on the evidence gathered, the courts have already convicted more than 30 defendants, giving them long prison terms and some life sentences,” he stated.
The president Vladimir Putin said last April that Russia had taken Mariupol under its control as part of what it described as a “special military operation” after a siege that Ukraine says has killed tens of thousands of civilians and left the city in ruins Earth.
Reuters could not independently verify the alleged war crimes Bastrykin is referring to.
