Its CEO and founder OceanGateStockton Rush, who is among the five stranded on the Titan submarine, had admitted in an interview he had given to the American network CBS in December 2022 that he knew the dangers of diving thousands of meters deep in the Atlantic Ocean.
Speaking on the ‘Sunday Morning’ show, he said his ‘biggest fear’ was ‘things that will prevent me from coming to the surface’.
“Overhanging rocks, fishing nets, danger of the boat getting stuck. And, this is just an experimental technique. It’s pretty clear – if something sticks out don’t go under it. If there is a net, do not go near it. So you can avoid them if you’re just slow and steady.”
Mr Rush also said “there is a limit” to how safe the whole operation could be, despite predictions.
“I mean, if you just want to be safe, don’t get out of bed. Don’t get in your car. Don’t do anything. At some point, you’re going to take some risk, and it’s really a risk-return question. I think I can do it safely by breaking the rules.”
