Vienna has emerged, for the fourth time in the last five years, at the top of the ranking of the most pleasant cities to live inaccording to the list of the Economist Intelligence Unit, a research institute affiliated with The magazine Economist.

The EIU index is based on 30 qualitative and quantitative criteria in specific areas: stability, health system, culture, environment, education, infrastructure.

The Austrian capital offers an almost ideal combination in these areas and is not penalized except for the lack of major sporting events.

In 2023, across all the cities studied, the average quality of life index reaches its highest level in fifteen years, especially in terms of health, education and culture, after the end of the restrictive measures linked to the pandemic.

In contrast, scores fall for stability in many cities, especially in Europe, due to the protests they experienced.

The top ten

The second place is occupied by Copenhagen.

Between the 3rd and the 9th place, cities of Australiaher Switzerlandof CanadaAs well as Osaka (Japan) and the Oakland (New Zealand), which together occupy 10th.

Paris and Lyon retreated

Conversely, violent protests against pension reform in France saw Paris and Lyon drop down the rankings.

Paris dropped from 19th place in 2022 to 24th in 2023 and Lyon from 25th to 30th.

The London occupies the 46th position in 2023, New York on the 69th.

Cities in Asia and Oceania see the biggest rise in one year: h Wellington (New Zealand) records an increase of 35 places, the Hanoi (Vietnam) 20, n Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) 19.

At middle positions of the ranking are found many cities of China and the Athena.
