The political leadership in Kiev on Friday attributed the slowness to this stage of progress in the much-discussed Ukrainian counteroffensive to recapture territory seized by Russian troops to the reluctance of Western nations to supply weapons to Ukraine’s armed forces.

“Time wasted [στην προσπάθειά μας] to convince our partners to give us the necessary weapons is reflected in the specific Russian fortifications built during this period,” said Mykhailo Podoliak, adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, via Twitter.

He pointed out in particular that the Russian forces set up defenses and a system of minefields while they were waiting for the counterattack.

Breaking Russian lines now requires a “reasonable and balanced approach,” he continued.

“A soldier’s life is the most important value for Ukraine today. The military command is focused on military science and intelligence gathering, not on cheerleaders in the stands.”

Mr. Podoliak also echoed a recent statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stressing that the war is not a “Hollywood movie.”
