Ukrainian forces are “very likely” to have recaptured territory in the country’s eastern Donbas region that has been held by Russia since 2014, the BBC reports and according to information from the British Ministry of Defence.

The same publication said that on Saturday, a Ukrainian commander said that land had been recaptured near the Russian-held village of Krasnohorivka. Airborne forces have since made “minor advances” east of that village in Donetsk, the UK MoD says.

This development, notes the BBC, comes as Ukraine’s president said his country’s counter-offensive was progressing on all fronts. Speaking during his overnight address, Volodymyr Zelensky said it was a “happy day” for Ukraine, but did not elaborate or talk about specific sectors.

In 2014, Russia illegally annexed the southern peninsula of Crimea, and Russian-backed forces took control of parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions that border Russia to the east.

In its daily intelligence briefing, the UK Ministry of Defense said Ukraine’s advances east of Krasnohorivka were “one of the first cases since the Russian invasion in February 2022 that Ukrainian forces have retaken an area held by Russia since 2014”.
