Just Stop Oil clarified in a statement that it was an act of “resistance to the company’s continued involvement in human rights violations, in the context of the construction of the EACOP (East African Crude Oil Pipeline) pipeline.”
The organization is calling for the suspension of this colossal project for the 1,500-meter long oil pipeline that stretches to the coast of Tanzania, crossing many protected habitats.
This project has become a hallmark of TotalEnergies’ controversial choice to continue investing in fossil fuels despite the climate crisis and a symbol of the anti-oil media campaign.
Also today, 26 Ugandan citizens and 5 French and Ugandan associations appealed to the courts in France seeking compensation from TotalEnergies for the “damages”, according to them, caused by the project.
Tens of thousands of people in Uganda and Tanzania are affected, according to them, by total or partial expropriations as a result of this project.
For Just Stop Oil, “this project will release 379 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is 25 times the annual emissions of Uganda and Tanzania combined”.
At 08:00 British time (10:00 Greek time) Just Stop Oil activists entered the headquarters of TotalEnergies located in Canary Wharf in London and threw black paint in the reception area. Others simultaneously threw orange paint on the outside of the building. They all sat in front of the company headquarters until he arrived the policewhich arrested 27 activists on “suspicion of criminal damage and aggravated trespass”.
