“I told Putin not to assassinate him”
Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko said today that he told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin not to assassinate Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin during the mercenary mutiny.
“I told Putin: we can kill him, that’s not a problem. Either with the first attempt or with the second. But I told him: don’t do it,” Lukashenko said to Belarusian officials, according to a video posted on Telegram.
The Belarusian president confirmed that Prigozhin had arrived in Belarus after receiving “security guarantees” given by Putin during a speech on Monday. Putin has repeatedly thanked Lukashenko for brokering an end to the paramilitary group’s brief insurgency.
The leader of the Belarusian regime said earlier today that his country would benefit from the “experience” of the Wagner fighters.
As he emphasized, according to the state news agency Belta, Belarus is not building camps for the organization, but will host its fighters if they want.
“We offered them one of the abandoned military bases. With pleasure – we have a fence, we have everything – set up your tents,” said Lukashenko.
He also stated that there are no plans to open any Wagner recruiting center in Belarus.
