The US government is considering imposing new restrictions on exports of microchips suitable for artificial intelligence to China, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Shares of NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) fell 1.4% after the news. These two companies, like Micron, have been in the crossfire of the conflict between the governments of the world’s two largest economies.

In September, NVIDIA announced that President Joe Biden’s administration had asked it to stop exporting two leading microchips suitable for artificial intelligence to China.

According to the Wall Street Journal report, the Commerce Department will stop exports of microchips made by NVIDIA and other companies to customers in China as early as July.

The ministry did not immediately respond when asked by Reuters for comment on the report.

The new restrictions being considered by the US government would ban the export of various chips, including the A800, without first securing a special license, according to the publication.
