THE Pope Francis received his wife in audience today Julian Assangethe WikiLeaks founder who is imprisoned in Britain and is fighting extradition to the United States.
“The Pope received Ms. Stella Assange, with family members” said a Vatican statement without further details
Stella Assange tweeted that her family was “overwhelmed” by the private hearing, and posted a photo of herself dressed in black in St Peter’s Square with the hashtag #FreeAssangeNOW.
She herself leads the campaign for her husband’s release, but the Vatican did not say whether the issue was discussed at the meeting or whether Francis expressed any support for the matter.
A Vatican spokesman said papal hearings are private affairs.
Assange is wanted in the US for leaking confidential US military files and diplomatic cables in 2010. His supporters see his prosecution as a politically motivated attack on journalism and free speech.
Washington says the release of the documents had put lives at risk.
