Forts Paris and other cities for Saturday night – Hundreds of malls, shops and banks destroyed – Buses, trams stop, shops close in Marseille, Lyon, St Etienne
France is in a state of absolute chaos, after the 4th night of riots in many cities of the country, despite the unprecedented restrictive and police measures. The reactions in all major cities to the death of a 17-year-old by a policeman’s gun continue with great intensity, while the account of the disasters by the Ministry of Economy, highlights the magnitude of the anger and outburst of the citizens.
According to the first assessment by the French Ministry of Economy, 200 shopping malls, 200 large retail stores, 250 tobacconists and 250 bank branches have been destroyed so far.
The situation in France appears to be at a critical level now, which forced French President Emmanuel Macron to postpone his planned visit to Germany. Mr Macron is in his office and is being briefed on the developments, as well as on the measures that will be imposed in the next few hours across the country to limit – if possible – the incidents on Saturday night.
For four 24 hours, and despite the restrictions and curfew, France is immersed in chaos and destruction, while the details that see the light of day from the police action, which resulted in the death of the 17-year-old, add fuel to the fire of anger, as the extreme behavior of the police bodies and the unnecessary violence they used are highlighted.
The 17-year-old’s funeral was held in a close family circle so as not to spark a new cycle of violence, but Paris and other major French cities are bracing for another difficult night.
Transfers to Marseille, St Etienne, Strasbourg and other cities are at a standstill. In Marseille, public transport stopped at 18:00. Intercity networks stopped at 3:30 p.m., as did self-service bicycles and the 35 parking spaces managed by the Marseille metropolis. In Saint-Etienne, public transport was suspended at 2 p.m., while traders were asked to close their businesses.
The Strasbourg transport company has canceled all its routes from this Saturday noon and no bus and tram lines are running from 13:00.
In Lyon, buses and trams will stop from 20:00 and 19:00 respectively. The city asked operators to “remove self-service scooters downtown and in certain neighborhoods” so they are not used “as destination-based weapons to break windows.”
At the same time, Marseille is shielding itself. Police headquarters announced a massive CRS reinforcement, sequestration of armored vehicles and two gendarmerie helicopters. The police plane will be flying over the city throughout the night to help spot incidents.
