Oil pipeline rupture in Komi Republic in northwestern Russia threatens to leak 1,000 cubic meters of oil into a nearby river and cause significant environmental damage, the head of the state environmental regulatory authority Rosprirodnadzor said today.
“There was a rupture in an oil pipeline near Urinsk. According to our calculations, 1,000 cubic meters of oil may leak into the Kolva River,” wrote official Svetlana Radionova on the Telegram messaging app.
“Petroleum has entered the ground and water, this is a great disaster for the environment”she wrote.
Local authorities said the incident occurred on Sunday in a pipeline of the Yuzno-Osh field, which is operated by Nobel Oil LLC. In the area it has meant “alarm”.
On behalf of Nobel Oil it was not possible to have a direct comment on this matter.
In May 2021, an oil spill from a pipeline in Komi released 100 tons of oil, of which nine tons ended up in the Kolva River.
The hydrocarbon-rich region witnessed one of the worst oil spills in Russia’s history in August 1994, when its aging pipeline network leaked what was officially reported at the time to have reached 79,000 tonnes, or 585,000 barrels. Independent estimates put the number at 2 million barrels.
