Borrell was expected to visit Beijing on July 10 to meet his Chinese counterpart and discuss “strategic issues” including human rights and Russia’s war in Ukraine
China has canceled a trip by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell scheduled for next week, a European Union spokesman said today.
No reasons were given for the cancellation, which comes as Europe tries to limit the risks posed by its close economic relationship with China, which Brussels describes as an “economic competitor and systemic adversary”.
“Unfortunately, we have been informed by our Chinese counterparts that the planned dates next week are no longer possible and we must now look for alternatives,” spokeswoman Nabila Masraly said in a written statement to Reuters. China’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Borrell was expected to visit Beijing on July 10 to meet his Chinese counterpart and discuss “strategic issues” including human rights and Russia’s war in Ukraine, the EU’s ambassador to China said on Sunday.
It is the second time this year that Borel’s trip has been cancelled. The official was unable to travel in April after testing positive for COVID-19.
